It's slang.
A flat top guitar, especially a dreadnought used for flatpicking, is often called
a "flat top box" by slang wielding country pickers:
The term "jazz box" is often used to mean "arch top f-hole guitar"
used for playing jazz music:
Come to think of it, I rarely hear jazz players using the term "jazz box."
Mostly I hear it used by players of other styles of music. I've never heard it used
derisively, by the way.
Guitar makers and factories often use the term "box" to mean a guitar body
in production: "This week we're making a lot of boxes; next week we'll do the
necks."
