FRETS.COM When Frets Go Wrong


If the ends aren't trimmed,
Frets can Push off Binding

This problem is pretty straightforward. I didn't trim my fret end quite short enough, or I got the fret a little off center as I tapped it in place. Either way, the result was the same, the fret pushed the binding off the edge of the fingerboard:




Quick as a limpet, I whipped out my regular soldering iron. This is the one I use for pickup installation, and it has a lower heat than the one I use for heating frets when pulling them out:

Just like magic, the hot fret melts right into the binding. The binding simply squishes back in place, and the job is back on track.
