Rattlers

Particularly among rural musicians, it's fairly common to see rattlesnake rattles
stashed inside fiddles and guitars:
From accounts I've read and heard, these rattles are more than obvious bits of macho
symbolism. Supposedly, their odor would keep rats and mice from nesting in or molesting
precious instruments.
