An elegant 19th century
Fancy French Style Guitar
© Frank Ford, 1999; Photos by FF
I presume this is one of those late 19th century guitars made in an earlier style,
much as the myriad vintage reproductions now available. Martin, Gibson and others
are madly copying their own earlier work, including instruments that were originally
made only a few years ago.
This guitar has Brazilian rosewood back and sides, spruce top and a mahogany neck.
The neck is veneered in Brazilian rosewood, and has the classic "ice cream
cone heel" and grafted headstock. You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer set
of Jerome tuners with bone buttons and bone rollers. The binding is ivory, not celluloid.
Around the face, the engraved pearl inlays are set into a wide band of black mastic.
