Trash Can "Lid"

My bench is almost always covered with junk I should "put away," so I frequently need an emergency flat surface.

I solved that problem (sort of) by making sheet metal lids for my rectangular Rubbermaid trash cans:

In use, the lid sits right on top, and allows me a nice work area with a little opening to toss junk:

 

The edge of the sheet is bent into a "U" so it hangs inside the can when not in use as a work surface:
