I'm often reaching for a paper towel and wishing I could tear off just half a sheet. Once torn off the roll it's easy to rip a sheet down the middle, and I stick the remaining half back into the end of the roll for future use. I guess this trick wouldn't work on a regular horizontal paper towel roller, but on this vertical style, the extra piece doesn't interfere with me taking a full sheet if that's what I want:
