While we usually think of lubricating waterproof sanding sheets when we work on finishes, plastics or metal, here's a quick reminder that if you use kerosene or mineral spirits as your lubricant, the regular dry sandpaper sheets will work very well. The grit is held on by hide glue, which is insoluble in the petroleum based solvents. Below, I'm "lapping" a piece of aluminum with 150 grit to produce a sort of "brushed" finish:
