We all know we must never cut or drill round stock without at least holding it in a V-block. But, a V-block doesn't have to be a sophisticated precision ground cast iron affair. Here, I've just made a quickie from a small hunk of soft wood, so I can drill straight through this piece of bamboo without bumping my 1/2" brad point drill into something nasty:
